ANALYSIS AND FATIGUE: SEISMIC
QUALIFICATION
Detailed seismic qualification is possible using
the techniques of Finite Element Analysis. The seismic qualification
of a support stand for an automatic control valve in an industrial
process was critical for the safety of workers in the event of an
earthquake. Finite Element Analysis methods and modal analysis was
performed in order to ensure the integrity of the component and
the attached piping.
Once the system was accurately modeled, a simulation
of a typical earthquake was possible, allowing the design to be
qualified.
With increasing degrees of system complexity,
Finite Element Analysis techniques become an important step in seismic
design and qualification.
